Botox 101

BOTOX 101
Tina Llewellyn, RN, BSN

What is Botox?

Botox is a medicine that in very small doses prevents muscles from contracting. When muscles do not contract the skin appears smoother and facial lines soften.

Where is Botox used?
The 3 primary areas for cosmetic Botox treatment are:

  1. The frown lines, or 11's, between the eyebrows
  2. Horizontal forehead lines
  3. Crow's feet or lines around the eyes

Other, less common, areas for treatment are the upper lip (lip flip), dimpling of the chin, and bunny lines on the nose.

How long does Botox last?
Botox treatments typically last between 3-4 months. Therefore, treatments are required every 3-4 months to maintain results.

How much does it cost?
Botox is charged by the unit. Pricing varies depending on the treatment area. A full face treatment is typically between 50-60 units. This can vary depending on the age of the client, severity of facial wrinkles, and desired amount of facial movement. Lords & Ladies pricing is $13 per unit. Consultations are recommended to determine individual pricing.

Who can be treated with Botox?
Adult clients (male or female) may be treated with Botox as long as they are not pregnant, breastfeeding, and have no neuromuscular disorders.

Does it hurt?
Botox is injected using a very small needle similar to what diabetics use to deliver insulin to themselves. The injections themselves take less than 5 minutes to complete.

Will Botox make a person look unnatural?
Botox injections are meant to make a person appear more youthful and rested. The goal is to create less lines and wrinkles while still maintaining each individual's unique characteristics.
