What is a Lymphatic Massage and what does it do??

What Lymphatic Drainage achieves:

Lymphatic drainage primarily focuses on specific lymphatic nodes & points of the body as well as the natural flow of the lymphatic system. It’s believed that proponents of the lymphatic drainage process will reduce blockages & promote a healthier body.

Understanding the Lymphatic system:

It works WITH the circulatory system to deliver nutrients, oxygen & hormones to the cells that make up tissues of the body. It removes excess fluid, waste, debris, dead blood cells, pathogens, cancer cells, & toxins from those cells AND the space between them. There are between 600 – 700 lymphatic nodes present in the body, however once damaged or destroyed they do not regenerate. The lymphatic system is operated by exercise, as you move your muscles at the joint, that is what stimulates the nodes. Bend your elbow & you just squeezed a node. This is what moves the lymph.

What to expect during a Lymphatic Drainage session?

The therapist will work with flat hands & their fingers to stimulate gentle specific wave-like movements that will result in:

Reduction in edema & swelling while detoxifying the body giving relief from chronic & subacute inflammation such as sinusitis, bronchitis, ear infections, fibromyalgia. Helps prevent illness such as allergies, colds, viruses & migraines by bringing fresh nutrients & whisking away damaged cells. This is also great for healing acute injuries such as sprains, fractures & some arthritis. It aids in cell regeneration for burns, wounds, anti-aging for wrinkles & reduction in cellulite. It is even safe & gentle enough for expecting mothers in the second trimester, also promotes relaxation, aids with insomnia, relieves stress, loss of vitality & could help with “brain fog”.

Cautions & who may not be a good candidate:

Acute lymphedema may need additional medical treatment & acute asthma will need to wait until the crisis has abated. Lymphatic drainage is not recommended for those who have heart conditions, kidney failure, have had blood clots, have cancer & actively or just recently received treatment. Anyone who has an active infection, it is recommended to wait 7 days after the infection because you don’t want to reactivate it if you are still currently fighting it.

Indications that Lymphatic Drainage is good for:

Tooth pain, acne, rosacea, eczema, wrinkles, scar, constipation, stress, ulcers, IBS, colitis, Crohn’s, diverticulitis, pancreatic insufficiency, chronic fatigue syndrome, chronic pain, sleep disorder, snoring, toxic chemical poisoning, detoxification, jet lag, hangover, migraines, vertigo, concussion, facial paralysis, Bell palsy, Parkinson’s, MS, neuromuscular degeneration, epilepsy, glaucoma, cataracts, clogged tear ducts, sprains, strains, dislocations, whiplash, low back pain, tinnitus, Menier’s, Sjogren syndrome, sinusitis, hay fever, bronchitis, emphysema, post anesthesia, osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, psoriatic arthritis, gout, lupus, fibromyalgia, osteoporosis, bursitis, tendonitis, tennis elbow, carpal tunnel, trigger finger, pre & post-surgical, node removal, scarring, fibrosis, Burns, skin grafting, face/eye lift & vein stripping.

Things to know and aftercare:

Lymphatic drainage may have an effect on everyone differently.

Lymphatic drainage can have an effect on some medications & their pharmacokinetics (which means the movement of drugs within the body, the absorption & excretions.) Some have sudden high bursts of excess energy, some are hit with sudden fatigue. This is part of the detoxification process, your system is processing what the session has moved into your system that was stagnant. ( This processing of stagnant lymph applies to some of the following below as well )

May cause diarrhea, nausea, dizziness & skin breakouts due to the fact we are moving toxins & we just opened everything up to flow. Drink & rest

You may suffer from a “healing crisis” this lasts a few hours & it is the body purging itself of infection & toxins. You may feel like you are getting sick, just drink & rest. It may increase menstruation flow & urination since we are working with fluids in your system. May increase relaxation and the need to sleep the day of the session

And last but not least and very very important…. drink, drink, drink!!
