Paddle Brush

When you think of the image next to “hair brush” in the dictionary, you probably envision some version of a paddle brush. This classic brush is shaped like a paddle, usually either in rectangle or oval form, and features flexible bristles, often atop a cushion.

💡Note: Some people differentiate between a paddle brush and a cushion brush, but for simplicity’s sake we’re assigning them to the same category.

The paddle brush is one of the most popular and versatile hair brush types. It’s a great hair brush for straight hair, but it’s also a suitable brush for thick hair. It’s also effective in detangling, reducing static, and smoothing. Different bristles can differentiate the experience: for instance, pin bristles (the style featured on Lords & Ladies’ in-house paddle brush) is best for detangling, whereas boar bristle or a mixed bristle is best for promoting hair growth and stimulating shine.

Wet Brush

Also called a detangling brush, this hair brush’s objective is simple: To detangle hair without damage. As the name implies, it can be used on wet hair, but it can also be used on dry hair.

A wet brush brushes feature flexible bristles designed to gently glide through and resolve tangles with minimal friction. Whether you use it wet or dry, it’s a great hair brush for wavy hair, thick hair, or hair that tends toward tangles.

Round Brush

This hair brush type is sometimes called a round styling brush, or a “barrel” brush because of its shape: a cylinder with bristles lining the circumference, and a handle so you can maintain your grip. Sizes and materials can vary; the bristles might be natural or synthetic, and the barrel might be ceramic, metal, or plastic.

The magic of the round brush is in the central cylinder. When combined with a blow dryer, it heats up and acts like a curling wand, transforming it into a styling tool that can help you attain an enviable bounce and keep frizz at bay. (Note: If you frequently style with heat, don’t forget to protect your hair! We love Mizani’s Press Agent Raincoat Styling Serum as an all-purpose blow dry serum.)

It may take some experimentation, but there is a round brush for every hair type. But one word of caution: A round brush with a metal barrel that gets very hot might not be the best hairbrush for fine hair — opt for a mixed or boar bristle round brush instead.

Loop Brush

When you look quickly, a loop brush looks like your average paddle brush. But there’s an important difference: Instead of traditional bristles with blunt ends, the bristles are rows of little loops. These looped bristles are ideal for extensions since they won’t get stuck in wefts (the attachment points of the extensions to your natural hair) but can still address tangles. A loop brush is also suitable for natural hair and is considered a good brush for curly hair.

Teasing Brush

Also called a backcomb brush, this brush has a slim profile, coarse, dense bristles, and a handle that comes to a point. It is multifunctional: It can be used to back-comb your hair for volume, and the pointed end can be used to detangle or to create a strong part. But there’s a whole lot more to teasing brushes than just backcombing — check out this blog post for some clever ideas.

💡Teasing can be tough on your hair. One of our favorite remedies? Absolut Repair Molecular Rinse-Off Serum. It repairs the hair’s molecular structure, evens out porosity and gives your hair body while keeping your strands manageable.

Vent Brush

A vented brush features “vents” or hollow sections on the base. These openings increase airflow, which reduces dry time when using a blow dryer. If you’re looking for a multitasking hair brush that’s perfect for simultaneously blow-drying and detangling, a vent brush is a must-have. It’s an especially great hair brush for thick hair, which tends to take longer to dry.

Wide-Tooth Comb

The best hair brush for wavy hair and curly hair might actually be a comb. Technically, a wide-tooth comb is not a hair brush. But since it’s adjacent to the brushes featured on this list, it’s worth a mention. A wide-tooth comb has thicker “teeth” with more space between them. This makes them ideal for combing through a larger amount of hair or tangled hair. According to L’Oreal Paris, “ A wide tooth comb is much kinder on hair thanks to the wide space between the teeth, which allows it to minimize friction.” A wide-tooth comb is also one of the best picks for detangling damp or wet hair.

Military Brush / Palm Brush

Alternately referred to as a military brush or palm brush, this looks like a hair brush that had its handle cut off; you hold it in your palm to brush through your hair. It was originally designed for compact storage so Army personnel could travel light; these days, it’s a great pick for short hair on men or women.

Hot Brush

A so-called “hot brush” is a brush with a built-in heater that helps seal your hair cuticles so that you can minimize frizz as you style. Or, as an article entitled “I Have Flat Hair, But This Product Gives Me ’90s Supermodel Volume” expresses, the hot brush is an essential tool for “achieving a bouncy blowout at home.”

Our favorite hot brush? The GHD Glide Hot Brush, which features ceramic technology with ionizer that eliminates frizz and transforms unruly strands in a few quick strokes.
