Balayage History

Balayage was created in the ‘70s by French colorists who designed a technique that allowed them to avoid the foil and caps of traditional highlighting. The word “balayage” means to paint or to sweep, and that's exactly what they are doing to your hair. Your stylist will determine just the right placement of color and then freehand paint the color into those locations.

Though balayage has been around since the 1970s, it has seen a resurgence in popularity recently. This is primarily due to the number of celebrities who are opting for this technique on their own hair. People like Kim Kardashian and Jennifer Lopez have contributed to the growing interest in this decades-old process.

Balayage Process

Balayage allows for a lot of creativity and personalization. Our trained stylists will place the color in areas that help accentuate your facial features, skin tone, and natural hair color. This means you won't have to deal with those aggravating lines that appear as highlighting grows out.

An interesting difference between balayage and traditional highlighting is that it is not designed to saturate the hair strands; at least not until the very tips are reached. This allows it to provide a blended and smooth appearance in your hair.

Is Balayage Right for You?

If you are considering balayage, you should know that the time to get it done varies based on how much of your hair you want colored. A few small highlights won't take more than a couple of minutes. However, if you are wanting some significant color, it could last as long as three hours.

Thankfully, you can enjoy your balayage treatment a good deal longer than you would a traditional highlighting job. Since there are no regrowth lines, you can avoid the excessive returns to the salon. And, because it is designed to provide you with a sun-kissed appearance, even as it grows out it will retain that natural look.

Another great thing to note about balayage is that you don't have to have long hair to make it work for you. And, the texture of your hair won't hinder your ability to have it done either. Balayage is a flexible, personalized technique that will work for all hair types and lengths.
