During a balayage highlighting service, your stylist will paint color on your hair where he or she determines it should go based upon your skin's shading, hair length, and even bone structure. The technique is so dependent on the stylist that you should absolutely make sure that yours has current training and sufficient experience.

The aesthetic created with balayage should be natural, multi-tonal, and well blended for an elegant and subtle coloring lift. The color is typically darker closer to the head and lighter further down the hair shaft, but it isn't uniformly applied.

Other coloring options that involve more than one shade of color include traditional foiling highlights and ombre. Traditional foils provide a highlight that is the same shade on the entire length of the highlighted section, and Ombre creates a transition from darker to lighter coloring downward.
