Balayage Explained

Since you are obviously considering balayage, it is probably a good idea to have balayage explained so you know exactly what you are getting yourself into. Balayage is a French term that means “to sweep” or “to paint.” It is a freehand highlighting technique that foregoes traditional foils and caps. And, because it is a specialized process, you want a highly trained stylist to provide this service.

A Lords & Ladies professional will be able to personalize the outcome to make certain that the highlights are placed exactly where you need them in order to look your best, giving you the sun-kissed, and natural looking hair you desire.

What to Know Before Getting Balayage

You have probably heard that balayage highlights are low maintenance. In fact, that might be the number one reason you are considering this technique. But, it is still a highlighting technique that requires some lightening method, which could include bleaching. The darker your hair, and the lighter you want the balayage, the more work it will take to achieve. This means there's the potential for having to sit through multiple lightening sessions before you have the hair you're dreaming of.

Maintaining Your Balayaged Hair

As we discussed before, balayage is a relatively low maintenance technique. Once you have reached your optimum color, you won't have to visit the salon every two weeks for touch-ups to areas that have grown out. However, you still need to take good care of your hair. Here are our maintenance suggestions:

  • Use only sulfate free hair products
  • Switch your conditioner for a hair mask once or twice a week
  • Leave the masks on for at least 3 minutes, but not more than 5
  • Shower in lukewarm water because hot water removes essential oils
  • Try not to use heating tools

Following these instructions should help you maintain your balayage look for its optimum time length.

Make Sure Balayage is Right for You

People who are new to color treatments are often the best candidates for balayage because of its natural looking results. And, since it can be provided for people with all hair lengths, colors, and textures, it makes a great first-time experience.

Of course, you don't have to be new to color to try balayage. So, if you are looking for a lower maintenance color, this will suit your desires as well. Taking time with your stylist to discuss the process and results will help you make sure balayage is right for you.
