Understanding Balayage

While balayage has only recently received acclaim, it has actually been in existence since the 1970s. French colorists created this process which requires stylists to freehand paint your hair with the highlights you desire. It is a low maintenance option for hair color that will give you a beautiful new look. But maybe you need more information for understanding balayage? Here's what we think you need to know:

  1. Balayage is a technique for highlighting your hair that doesn't require the traditional caps and foil that other methods do. And, the length of your hair is not important, it can be used on any hair length. Conceptually, balayage is supposed to provide you with that sun-kissed, natural, lightening effect.
  2. People new to color treatments will most benefit from balayage. This is because there is no drastic color change and it can work on any hair shade. Plus, its low maintenance upkeep makes it ideal for all sorts of people. You won't have to worry about constantly going in for touchups because you're not dyeing the whole length of your hair. When it grows out it looks intentional.
  3. While balayage is low maintenance, it still requires bleaching. So, the darker your hair is, and the lighter you want the highlights, the longer the process will take to achieve optimum appearance. In fact, it may not be a one-sitting experience. It is important to keep that in mind when you are making your decision.
  4. Because balayage is a freehand technique it is best left to professionals. Your experienced stylist will determine the right placement of the highlights and then freehand those spots without the use of foil and caps. Consultations are always advised, and it is a good idea to bring in photos for inspiration.
  5. Balayage grows out naturally so you won't have to worry about the regrowth line created by traditional highlighting processes. But it is still a dye job and you need to take good care of your hair after it's done. We suggest using sulfate-free products and using a hair mask once or twice a week in place of your normal conditioning procedures.
  6. You don't have to use blonde highlights in your balayage experience. In fact, there are people doing “reverse” balayage in which they add darker colors instead. Of course, there are some colors that seem to work best. These include peach, pearl, rose quartz, blue, and rose gold.
