The 411 on Balayage
Developed in the 70s, balayage is a French coloring technique that uses freehand application of color instead of caps and foil. And, it can be used on even the shortest haircuts. So, here's the 411 on balayage:
- Why is it popular? Balayage gives you the ability to achieve a wide berth of effects from strong and punky to something more soft and natural. People love the idea of being fashionable and looking good but we're all too busy to spend exorbitant amounts of time in the salon. Balayage doesn't create that line of demarcation noticeable in traditional highlight techniques. You can let it grow out naturally without being afraid someone will notice.
- How is it done? Because this is a freehand technique, every professional has a preference. Some use a backing board, others separate the sections, and others will tease the hair and freehand the ends. It is all based on the client's desired look and the stylist's personal process.
- Will it work for me? Well, that depends on the current state of your hair. The best candidates for balayage have natural hair. Meaning, they haven't had it colored or highlighted. If, however, you do have color in your hair, the stylists at Lords and Ladies can create a means in which to get your hair prepared strictly for balayage applications.
- What cut works best? While balayage can be applied to all hair lengths and styles, we think it looks best on flowing hairstyles. This is because a loose curl, or tousled look allows the color variations to be seen as they ribbon through your hair.
- How is it maintained? Ensuring your hair is in optimum health is the best way to maintain your balayage color. It won't dry your hair out any more than other highlighting techniques but both of them require sulfate-free shampoos and conditioners to look best and last longest.
- What colors work best? Balayage was designed to create a sun-kissed natural glow. Therefore, lighter colors are generally added to achieve this look. However, there has been a new trend in what some are calling “reverse†balayage. Darker colors are being added instead. We're not sure how long that trend will last so we suggest discussing color options with your experienced stylist.
