FAQs about Balayage

You probably didn't know this, but balayage isn't a new technique. In fact, it was developed in the 1970s by French colorists. And, decades later, this natural looking lightening technique is still going strong! But maybe you have some questions about how it's done. Here are our answers to the FAQs about Balayage:

What is it?

Balayage is a technique used to highlight hair. In French, the word means “to sweep.” Unlike traditional highlighting, no foil or caps are required. And, you don't have to have long hair to enjoy the beautifying effects it creates.

Is it right for me?

Never taken the coloring plunge? Then balayage is a great first experience in this arena. No matter what shade your natural locks are, balayage will enhance your natural beauty. And, you don't have to return to the salon frequently for touchups because you're not coloring the full length of your hair.

How is it done?

Like we said previously, foil and caps are not used in the balayage technique. Instead, this is a freehand process. Sweeping, as applied to the meaning of the name, means that your stylist will be sweeping color through your hair where he/she thinks it will create the best look. Because this is a freehanded painting concept, you need to ensure that your stylist is skilled in this technique.

Does the color have to be blonde?

Absolutely not! While most traditional balayage highlights are blonde, this technique opens your coloring options up completely. You can experiment with whichever colors suit you. In fact, there's a new trend towards what's called “reverse” balayage in which darker color is woven through your already lighter hair color.

How is it maintained?

Balayage highlights will grow out quite naturally. You won't find the typical regrowth line that you have had in other highlighting jobs. But, since this is still highlighting, some of the typical maintenance will apply. We suggest you:

  • Apply sulfate-free products
  • Use a hair mask instead of conditioner once or twice a week
  • Shower in lukewarm water

These things will help your color last its optimum length. And, since you don't have the regrowth lines, you can forego the frequent touchups that traditional highlighting requires.
