What's the Difference Between Balayage & Ombre?

If you can't decide between the two because you just don't know the difference, let our experts help you:

  • Ombre. This is a technique that allows for a very short transition in color from dark roots to light ends. Ombre, in French, means, “a color tone that is graduated or shaded.” Ombre color is placed horizontally across the hair. It often becomes more of a style than a technique due to its unique look.
  • Balayage. In this technique, it is all about the application of the color. Since Balayage, in French, means “to paint or to sweep,” it allows for personalization. Color is freehand painted in a pattern chosen by the stylist to accentuate your personal features. It is generally more natural looking than other coloring techniques.

How are They Similar?

Because they both add lighter color to your hair, you can rest assured that either technique is going to provide you with an entirely different look. And, they are both fairly low maintenance. Unlike highlights that require frequent touchups and salon visits, both balayage and ombre will allow considerable time between additional applications.

It is important to note though, that because both ombre and balayage are specialized techniques, they will cost you more money. And, they will require more time in the salon chair.

How do I Choose?

As much as we'd like to tell you which one is the absolute best option for you, the reality is, it depends on what look you are hoping to achieve. And, in some instances both can be utilized simultaneously. Either of them is a potential option and the possibilities for creativity of application is almost endless.

The best advice we can give is to sit down with your stylist and discuss the two. The solutions you arrive at will depend on what look you are trying to acquire as well as what colors you intend to have applied. Using a gifted stylist, like those you will find at Lords & Ladies, will ensure that you make the best decision for your budget, appearance, and time investment.

Understanding the differences and similarities in the balayage vs ombre conundrum doesn't have to be as challenging as learning French! With a little guidance from the professionals at a Lords & Ladies Salon and Medical Spa you will be well on your way to embracing your new look with peace of mind.
