What is SPF and Why is it Important?

SPF is pretty straightforward. It stands for “Sun Protection Factor”, and is a measure of a sunscreen's ability to protect your skin from UVB rays. Less than 15 SPF is considered mild protection, SPF 15-30 is considered moderate protection, and SPF of 30 or more is considered high protection.

Here is the usual rule of thumb when using sunscreen. If it takes one minute for your unprotected skin to start turning red in the sun, an SPF 15 sunscreen may hold off the reddening 15 times longer. Likewise, if it takes 10 minutes for your skin to start to burn, using an SPF 30 sunscreen can protect it for 300 minutes, or 5 hours.

Keep in mind that SPF only protects against UVB rays, the rays that cause reddening or surface burns. It doesn't account for UVA rays, the rays that are responsible for long-term damage such as aging and wrinkles.

UVA rays can do a lot of damage before your skin turns red. In fact, one of five Americans will develop skin cancer by age 70, and many of them are a result of the damaging effects of UVA rays. Look for “broad spectrum sunscreen (also known as full spectrum sunscreen) protects against both UVA and UVB rays.

In terms of ingredients, there are mineral and chemical sunscreens. Each work differently and some sunscreens use both, so it's really more a matter of what works best for you.

Zinc Oxide and Titanium Dioxide are both very stable in sunscreen formulas when exposed to the sun.  Your skin does not absorb them, so they generally do not cause reactions, making them ideal for people with sensitive skin.
