Microneedling Facials: A Quick And Handy Guide
What Is Microneedling?
Microneedling is a minimally invasive cosmetic procedure that gives your skin some much-needed TLC with little to no downtime. It taps into the body’s natural ability to heal wounds by stimulating collagen and elastin production. The process leads to brighter, firmer, smoother, and younger-looking skin.
How Does It Work?
Microneedling should only be done through a professional service, a board-certified dermatologist, cosmetic surgeon, or aesthetician. They will first apply a topical numbing cream to the treatment area to avoid any possible pain. They’ll then use a pen-shaped tool with tiny, sterile needles to create puncture wounds in the top layer of the dermis. Finally, they will apply a calming treatment or serum.
What Can Microneedling Help With?
Microneedling is generally done on the face to target skin concerns, including but not limited to:
- Acne scars (not including keloid or raised scars)
- The appearance of enlarged pores
- Fine lines and wrinkles
- Hyperpigmentation
You can also get it on other body parts such as the thighs and stomach to target cellulite or scars.
How Long Does It Take to Show Results?
A major attraction of the microneedling treatment is that it shows results almost immediately.
You’ll be able to see skin tightening and pore reduction within a week from the treatment, but it will take anywhere from 4-6 weeks to see complete results. This is because your body’s collagen and elastin production cycles may affect the treatment’s efficacy.
If you want to maintain the results of microneedling, you will likely need multiple treatments. Talk to your doctor to devise a treatment plan that effectively addresses all your skin goals.
Is It Safe?
Microneedling is minimally invasive, so it’s safe for most people in good health. Barring the minor redness and skin irritation that can happen for a few days post-treatment, you should have a relatively safe experience.
However, it is not recommended for people who are pregnant, have open wounds or acne, have skin conditions like psoriasis or eczema, have recently gone through radiation therapy, are on medication for blood clotting, or have a bleeding disorder.
How To Take Care of Your Skin After Microneedling?
Microneedling essentially creates tiny wounds on your skin, which can make your skin ultra-sensitive to irritants and environmental stressors.
You should avoid sun exposure, using any chemical or physical exfoliants, retinol, makeup, and activities that can cause you to sweat during the first week of recovery.
Focus on soothing your skin. You can use cooling masks, antioxidant serums, and collagen-stimulating peptides to speed up your healing process.
