Taking Care of Your Hair at Home

Everyone wants hair that appears to have been perfected by a salon professional. And, we all want it to look that way every day, not just right after we leave the stylists' chair. Of course, schedules often interfere with regular salon appointments, so how can we take care of our hair at home in between those magic moments?

1. Consider how you wash your hair. Don't be too shocked to find out that over-washing is actually causing more damage to your hair than under-washing it would. Hair type is the deciding factor on frequency. Be sure to ask one of our professionals about how frequently you should wash your hair.
2. Wear protection. Hot curlers and straighteners, combined with UV exposure can damage your hair. Try using heat protectors to limit this damage at home. And, don't hold the blow dryer too close to your head.
3. Learn to blow dry properly. If you do it right, you should only have to blow dry your hair every few days. Try products that help prolong your style to ensure you don't overheat and damage your hair.
4. Invest in the right tools. Treat your hair like your skin. Don't go for cheap products or styling tools. Use a round brush for blow drying. Good brushes can make a world of difference. Wash them monthly in a mix of warm water and baking soda to get rid of product build-up.
5. Use a good conditioner. Curly headed people need to invest in deep conditioning that adds moisture and protein to your hair. Leave-in conditioners are a good thing too. Always towel dry after shampooing to prevent excess water from interfering with the conditioner.
6. Perfect your brushing technique. Don't be too aggressive or you will damage your hair. Brush twice a day. Brush from the bottom and work your way up to avoid frizz and split ends. Don't brush wet hair; use a wide-toothed comb instead.
